Martha wins the Marriage Equality political statement photo contest.

I wish I knew how to type in that bratty little mimicking voice my older sisters would use to tease me into tears throughout elementary school…and middle school and high school and college and even now when I’m home for the holidays. “But it’s for the wittle itty bitty chilwren… wah wah wah, ya little brat. Go tell mom (insert a roundhouse to the shoulder blades followed by a face smear into the carpet) you think I won’t kill you when she leaves?”

But seriously, the naysayers to marriage equality have a lot of explaining to do if they’re honestly going to use the “but it’s what’s best for the kids” defense. Until I see the individuals who feel this way spending their own time and money (I’m talking about actually doing something, not just voting or telling the gov what to do) to empty the orphanages, to get all children out of abusive homes, to empower single moms, to teach teens how great life is when you DON’T get knocked up, to increase funds for public education, to reduce the cost of college, and to make it a point to show all children love and compassion, I will never believe that this has anything to do with wanting what’s best for kids. Judgment and discomfort always shine through the pretty talk.

The other night I was in a Super Target in Atlanta and could hear a tiny little guy walking around lost and sobbing for his father. He must have passed 20 adults before he got to my aisle. His little voice had reached panic mode and his eyes were swollen with tears. I asked him if I could help and then left my cart (OH THE SACRIFICE!) and took the 10 min to walk and talk until we found his dad. I knew there was a chance that I’d have to begin shopping all over again but how could I let such a precious little thing be so terrified? (Now don’t get me wrong, I still don’t like kids).

I imagine every single person he passed would swear (with tears in their eyes) that they want what’s best for kids…yet when given the chance to show this little guy a safe environment their actions made their convictions clear.

Now I get that this has nothing to do with marriage equality. But in my mind it has everything to do with the proof that society is clueless when it comes to the “kind” of love kids need.

You’ve seen it before but I think it’s worth watching again. Keep in mind, if even one kid turns out “ok” then the entire stupid myth about gay parents damaging children has been busted.

And just for good measure, there are about a bazillion other kids with same sex parents who are pretty awesome too!

Easter Saturday Traditions

Mom has all the holiday photos from when we were little so I'm afraid I can't offer any proof that we really did wear white gloves with Easter tights. But I think this photo fits the story well. I'm sure you can imagine the craziness on Easter Eve with all these little girls. Missie is in the shorts, Fawn is in the blue jumper, Spring is in the stripes, Taffy is in red and I'm in mom's arms... because I'm the favorite.

As I was putting on my yard clothes to go outside and mow the lawn (for Easter mind you) I caught myself having the same conversation in my head that we use to have with our parents every Easter Saturday.

Us – “Why do we have to do the yard??? It’s our holiday too, ya know! We aren’t supposed to work!”

Mom or Dad (or both) – “Because the yard has to look nice for Easter.”

Us – “Buuut!!!”

Them – “Go!!”

Us – “It’s not fair!!!  GAW!!!”

Them – “How ’bout we don’t celebrate Easter this year?”

Us -(silence)

This got me thinking about the entire day and all the little things we would do to prepare for Easter Sunday.  Basically, Easter Saturday went a little something like this:

My Ka-Baby Bracelet

Kababy Bracelet, Red silk tied around my wristI’ve been wearing this silk string for exactly two weeks. It was tied to my wrist during a baby shower to act as a reminder for me (and 28 other ladies) to spiritually support a girlfriend through the last two months of her Chinese adoption process. After four years of ups and downs we were finally able to shower our friend with love (and little dresses), and begin the official countdown for Thea’s arrival to Boulder. Yeaaa Thea!

By the way, I think it’s hysterical that I’m calling it a “Ka-Baby” bracelet! Get it? Kabbalah? Ashton and Demi’s red bracelets? No? Not funny? Am I really the only one getting this joke? (crickets) Alrighty then…

TV Guide Cover featuring Falcon Crest

Lorenzo! Lorenzo! Lorenzo! Even fuzzy, you stir my soul. Sigh.....

Despite its reputation as merely being “Dallas with grapes”, Falcon Crest soon found its own niche amongst the prime-time dramas of the 1980s, occupying the middle ground between the two extremes of the genre — being more glamorous than Dallas yet not quite as outrageous as Dynasty. The distinctive location filming in the Napa Valley and the dry, wryly humorous tone of the scripts gave the series a personality of its own. And to this day, the series is still sought after in reruns and on DVD by thousands of fans.

The rivalry among Angela, Chase and Richard stayed at the core of the show for years, as more romantic entanglements spun around them. Lance and Cole found themselves not only caught up in their family battles, but also competing for Melissa’s affections. – The Jane Wyman Fan Club

A friend just posted on Facebook that she’d love to find the entire series of Falcon Crest and start a weekly viewing party, sparking a fantastic memory from my own childhood that I had to share.

Christmas, Family Traditions, Sisters

Max proves that good always conquers bad!

While decorating the tree I pulled up the original “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” and found myself laughing at a million holiday memories this precious little cartoon triggered.  Mom was always so great about allowing the television specials (Charlie Brown, The Grinch, Rudolf, Frosty) to be a big production in our house. She’d hurry us through our bath and dinner routine… in the good way, not the usual “If you don’t get your scrawny butt out of that tub you’re gonna regret what happens next!” way… Continue reading →
