Only two weeks into the wildfire season and Colorado is already seeing record destruction through three major fires. The most devastating one being the Black Forest Fire currently burning just north of Colorado Springs. Over 350 homes have been lost since Monday afternoon and the 15,700 acre fire is only 5% contained.

*Please consider sending some support – links at the bottom of my post.

I’m posting this glimpse of goodness to let everyone know that your prayers are working. Don’t stop sending your love and support, precious moments of healing are happening because of you.

We keep getting calls from family and friends asking about our own safety. So far Boulder has been spared from any flames coming over the mountains. Occasionally we get a whiff of smoke from the Big Meadow Fire in Rocky Mountain National Park (333 acres / 30% contained) but the chances of these fires reaching our area are very slim. At the same time the identical weather conditions still exist along the entire Front Range so Boulder is definitely on high alert. Our mountain community has had a rough couple of years due to fires and as a result this time of year is always very emotional.

I’m so proud of this photo. It was so emotional to see my good friend, Lily, who had been fighting the Fourmile Canyon fire for weeks on end. The tears are re-welling up as I type. During the fire she stopped coming home and was sleeping under the rescue trucks so that time wouldn’t be wasted on traveling between shifts. Her own house had been evacuated but she stayed on the line instead of returning to gather her things…as did all of our local firefighters. There were times when we could see the flames from the house. Charred debris still shows up in the garden. Sadly 163 Boulder homes were lost in Gold Hill. But it would have been much worse if it weren’t for Lily and the rest of our local heroes. There’s a code among firefighters that says you have to host an ice-cream party at the firehouse every time you get your photo in the paper. It was a great party!

Please consider donating to the Colorado wildfires and the Black Forest Wildfire.

But It’s For The Children… oh the hypocrisy!

Martha wins the Marriage Equality political statement photo contest.

I wish I knew how to type in that bratty little mimicking voice my older sisters would use to tease me into tears throughout elementary school…and middle school and high school and college and even now when I’m home for the holidays. “But it’s for the wittle itty bitty chilwren… wah wah wah, ya little brat. Go tell mom (insert a roundhouse to the shoulder blades followed by a face smear into the carpet) you think I won’t kill you when she leaves?”

But seriously, the naysayers to marriage equality have a lot of explaining to do if they’re honestly going to use the “but it’s what’s best for the kids” defense. Until I see the individuals who feel this way spending their own time and money (I’m talking about actually doing something, not just voting or telling the gov what to do) to empty the orphanages, to get all children out of abusive homes, to empower single moms, to teach teens how great life is when you DON’T get knocked up, to increase funds for public education, to reduce the cost of college, and to make it a point to show all children love and compassion, I will never believe that this has anything to do with wanting what’s best for kids. Judgment and discomfort always shine through the pretty talk.

The other night I was in a Super Target in Atlanta and could hear a tiny little guy walking around lost and sobbing for his father. He must have passed 20 adults before he got to my aisle. His little voice had reached panic mode and his eyes were swollen with tears. I asked him if I could help and then left my cart (OH THE SACRIFICE!) and took the 10 min to walk and talk until we found his dad. I knew there was a chance that I’d have to begin shopping all over again but how could I let such a precious little thing be so terrified? (Now don’t get me wrong, I still don’t like kids).

I imagine every single person he passed would swear (with tears in their eyes) that they want what’s best for kids…yet when given the chance to show this little guy a safe environment their actions made their convictions clear.

Now I get that this has nothing to do with marriage equality. But in my mind it has everything to do with the proof that society is clueless when it comes to the “kind” of love kids need.

You’ve seen it before but I think it’s worth watching again. Keep in mind, if even one kid turns out “ok” then the entire stupid myth about gay parents damaging children has been busted.

And just for good measure, there are about a bazillion other kids with same sex parents who are pretty awesome too!

Confession: The real reason I voted for Obama

All the credit for this goes to a FB acquaintance… which basically means Fox News.

In addition to “Beer For Bums”, and “Cellphones for Bums”….

I agree with keeping people on welfare FOREVER!

I want my parents and their friends to work two jobs while young able-bodied people live on handouts and get FOOD STAMPS!!! Seriously, who in the hell wants to learn how to fish?

I want the guys in the military (including the 4 in my family) to go off to war ill prepared and underfunded.

I believe in death squads… the more the merrier!

I want Obamacare to drain the system and leave everyone living on the streets…maybe the Baby Boomers will have to work THREE jobs!

All the ultra conservatives are exactly right, my vote had nothing to do with supporting a political party that sees women as equals and believes they are capable of making thoughtful and conscientious decisions for themselves and their families. And I certainly didn’t consider the idea that maybe the less fortunate should continue to get some support until we as a nation are back on our feet… and of course I see no difference between those who have real needs and those who are milking the system. Yes, I didn’t consider the ramifications of losing our credit rating and selling our country to China. I seriously have no clue about the dangers of the debt that’s been created and gave no thought to whose plan made more sense to me and my community.  On top of that, the notion that the US needs to work with the international community instead of telling them what to do never crossed my mind. I can’t imagine why we need to tread lightly as we move into an energy future that will hopefully offer alternative sources to the insanity that continues to take place with our suppliers in the Middle East.  And lastly, I never considered the views of family and friends who agree with the Republican agenda. I’m glad their candidate lost and and I’m especially glad that they’re worried about the future because of the decision I helped to make.

Whew! Feels good to clear that up! It bothered me that people assumed I put some thought into my decision and might have actually voted according to what I felt was best for my friends, my family and my community.

Embracing My Introverted Ways

Friends, Quiet time, Things I love

I expect most people consider me an introvert. I don’t think my preference to be alone is bad or strange, I’ve just always enjoyed doing the things I love on my own time and according to my own whims. For 30+ years I made many financial and social sacrifices in an effort to balance the expectations of being “a loyal friend” with how I would prefer to spend my time but now I’ve finally reached the point where I feel no obligation to trade my favorite pastimes for the social needs of others and as a result I’m really loving life.
