Posted in Americana, Holiday Traditions, Today In Boulder

I would have raced this year but my Olympic aspirations depend on me avoiding activities that require running (or any other exertion of energy) before 9:30 am on holidays…especially when 50,000 Boulderites are involved. L-R Erin, Spice, Janice, Chris Ratay & Peter Whatshisname.
Sorry my Memorial Day post is so delayed. I actually sat down last Tuesday and typed the most amazing entry about sitting on the sidelines of the 34th Bolder Boulder and watching over 50,000 wheelers, runners and walkers come together in one of the largest Memorial Day gatherings in the world. The post was complete with fabulous photos, hysterical captions, snark about Boulder, tears of pride, images of anguish, patriotism (with matching photo of the American Flag being carried by a group of Marines) and of course the best creative writing of my life but unfortunately I added one too many photos and the entire entry was deleted off the blog. Two hours of my best work wadded up and thrown into the virtual garbage can that holds all of WordPresses randomly deleted files.
So here’s a second attempt to recreate Memorial Day Part 1. PS, Part 2 involves me, Zippy the cat and a snake jumping around the backyard in the world’s most aggressive game of hot-snake…get it? Hot-potato but with a snake? Any hoo.

Unlike sane people, Chris and I have a crazy love for little burros. We believe the world’s problems are being solved behind those blank stares and if there were only a way for us to tap into their thoughts humanity would finally find the keys to peace and brotherly love. I’m serious, we LOVE donkeys, we take photos of donkeys, we purchase artwork with donkeys in it, we even have dreams for a little burro on our own little farm! YEA DONKEYS!!!!
Two weeks ago I read an advertisement for “Haulin’ Ass”…

I’ve been a vegetarian for over 20 years. I wish I could offer some magnanimous reason for not eating meat but I’m afraid it boils down to being so grossed out by the raw chicken I worked with during my 2 year stint at Bolton Dining Hall (UGA) that I haven’t been able to eat anything processed in a packing plant ever since.
I was a Student Manager for the dinner shift and one of my many roles was to check-in the 20,000+ chicken breasts that arrived each week. About 3 chickens into the first shipment I made the decision to stop eating food that had been touched by human hands…the chicken wasn’t the problem, it was all the filth and human grim that came with the birds. Of course the cleanliness of the dorm kitchen kaboshed that plan so I switched my conviction to include fried foods that were too hot to be touched and things I had washed with bleach in the laundry room sink. I dropped 10 pounds in my first two weeks of school.

I’m putting my blog timeline out of whack with this post but I have to share this fabulousness with the world. Tuesday’s trip back to Boulder was a tough one. First, to prepare for the snowstorm that was hitting Denver (and because they wouldn’t fit in my carry-on and I refuse to pay baggage fees) I was in Atlanta’s 85 degree heat wearing wool socks and a winter fleece. Next, I arrived at the airport just as the tornadoes were pummeling Texas so all air traffic was thrown into a tailspin and flights out of Atlanta were rescheduled with crazy long delays. Lastly, and others clearly agreed so don’t go thinking I’m the bitch here, there was a rather large number of shitty little kids and their screaming mothers waiting to board the flight. Needless to say the vibe at the airport was punchy.
So about 20 min into our two hour delay, Vanilla Kanye Ice shows up wearing his double hats with a pair of sunglasses ’round back and walking with a swag designed to make his Oh-limpic chain swing from pit to pit…oh it gets better!
