Honeybee packages, Boulder Co

Bees packages are approx 10,000 bees (5 lbs). These are from 2011. Because of cool temps they spent 3 days in the house - yes it is as creepy as it sounds!

I think most of you (all 3 of you) know that Chris and I are beekeepers. I like to fuss that this is actually Chris’ hobby yet I’m the one stuck wrangling 300,000 feisty Italians because he ended up working a long show instead of attending the beekeeping classes (insert breath to accommodate poor sentence construction) but in all honesty I LOVE being the queen bee of our little “ranch” (cracking the whip and making them produce MORE honey… I’m like Cruella DeVille except my coat is made of bee wings!) and I’m tickled to death with my latest role as the local “BEE LADY!!!!!” when it comes to frantic calls about swarms forming in the middle of backyard BBQ’s. The way people react to my cowboy boots and cardboard box when they’re expecting a frazzled ex-hippy in a hazmat suit with a butterfly net is pretty funny.  I’m sure we’ll be catching a few swarms this summer so I’ll keep you posted on the fun.

Pedestrian Caution Sign in Portugal

I took this photo in Portugal thinking, "why in the world would this sign be necessary"... and now I know! My Portuguese is horrible but I'm pretty sure the words at the bottom of the yellow sign have something to do with alcohol and pedestrians not mixing. I will be sending this to City Council.

For the longest time I’ve been sharing “Today In Boulder” stories with friends and family who don’t have the pleasure of living in The People’s Republic and abiding by its crazy ideals.  I always quote the Daily Camera (the most questionable journalism on the face of the planet) to prove that I’m not making this stuff up…and to make sure mom realizes the grammatical errors are not mine.

“Police: Drunken driver tried to hit pedestrian” – The Daily Camera

“Boulder Police arrested a man they say tried to hit a pedestrian in a crosswalk while in front of an officer after the pedestrian ‘made a face’ at the driver Thursday morning”

“Eric Ryan O’Connor, 30 was arrested on suspicion of attempted vehicular assault, DUI and failure to obey a traffic signal, according to the police report”

“According to the report, an officer was stopped at red light at the corner of Walnut and 11th streets at around 1 a.m. with O’Connor’s vehicle in front of him. According to the officer, a man walking in the crosswalk made “a face” at O’Connor. While the man was still in the crosswalk, O’Connor’s vehicle made a sudden turn toward him and accelerated in what the officer deemed a manner ‘attempting to hit the pedestrian’. The pedestrian was able to leap out of the way.”

Note from Spice- this is quoted directly from the camera, I did not omit the “a” in front of “red light” and I did not construct the “at around 1 a.m.” double preposition… nor did I build a sentence containing 4 prepositions.

A few more headlines from today:

“Polish National charged in fishing rod thefts pleads guilty”

“Buddhists reach out in green effort”   *this article is printed in the paper but I can’t find the link to the online edition… typical.

“Drunken driver with STAYCLN license plate receives suspended sentence, probation”

Sigh… and that’s where I live.

Happy Saturday!

In Honor Of International Women’s Day

Seldom do I let the language of idiots get to me (a change in recent years) but Rush’s latest comments followed by the GOP’s “That’s not how I would have said it” response has me flabbergasted by my fellowman. I’ve been trying to sum up my thoughts with regards to this happening a week prior to International Women’s Day but Jon Stewart beat me to the punch.

My gut vs “Stop Kony 2012”

Is Invisible Children’s “Stop Kony” video the best philanthropically branded scam since TOMS shoes?

Invisible Children Founders pose with guns

First, organizations like Invisible Children not only take up resources that could be used to fund more intelligent advocacy, they take up rhetorical space that could be used to develop more intelligent advocacy.... And while we’re on the subject of what does and doesn’t help, maybe don’t get photographed fondling big (former) rebel guns. Just saying. - Wronging Rights

As you can guess, the whole “Stop Kony” viral wave pushed some of my buttons. I wish I could say my hesitance with the bandwagon was because of the education I’ve gained while supporting non-profits that are working in Uganda but I’m afraid the bulk of my skepticism was more likely motivated by how little credit I give to the specific friends who first FB’d the video. Sorry guys, but telling me you’ve been moved to tears because your teen (the same teen you’ve described as a slug for the last 4 years) has been inspired to change the world and now the two of you are retweeting a video like mofos, kinda suggests that you can’t find Africa on a map.

Anywho, I opted not to retweet / share / poke or call the Boulder City Council to take action, until I did a little research on my own, and now I’m ready to dive into the social media chatter.

Just for the record, I’m talking about FB friends you don’t know…I swear I’m not talking about you or your fabulous kid.

Commercial Love

Tags

, , ,

This commercial has been playing for a couple of months and I have to say that I still love it as much as I did when I saw it the first time.  A, she’s beautiful and perhaps the only woman I’ve ever seen who can pull off frosted green eyeshadow. B, I love the message, “goofy is sexy” (for obvious reasons). And C, the song makes me clinch my fists and roll my shoulders to the beat a la Big Willie Style…that’s Will Smith for those of you who didn’t spend the 90’s gettin’ jiggy with it.

Enjoy!
