Yesterday evening I returned home from my hike on Sanitas to find this photo on the  Boulder Daily Camera’s online evening update. This very camera has probably captured my own mug a bazillion times. I like triggering the flash in the late evening. If only my coat was as fluffy and full. I guess it’s true, the camera really does add ten claws -wa wa waaaa!

Mt. Sanitas is a ten min walk from the house and a regular activity in my weekly routine. Twice during my history in Boulder I have learned that I was unknowingly in the presence of mountain lions while hiking on Sanitas (strange sentence structure but read it twice and I swear it will make sense). It’s a creepy feeling when someone comes down the path holding rocks and telling you to keep an eye out for a full grown male just spotted licking his chops. They can span 20′ in a single bound. No doubt I’m just as clobber-worthy as a young fawn or a Terrier on a leash… the second most popular snack in these parts.

No telling how many times I’ve been in close proximity to lions while on my daily routine around the house. In a typical Boulder year they’re spotted in and around town a handful of times; lounging on porches or resting in trees as they digest the latest outdoor pet. Once, when I was gardening late in the evening, I thought one was on the other side of the backyard fence. But when I moved to take a look whatever it was ran off in a large, padded foot, kind of way. I happen to be very familiar with the sounds of a skittish mule deer so the reasonable explanation was immediately ruled out and I figured it was time to call it a day.

Even though Boulder has seen its share of lion activity (via deer carcasses tucked under parked cars for safe keeping and attacks on pets and children-gulp!), I never wish the mountain lions gone. Their presence is a reminder of why we moved to Boulder in the first place. We love the Rocky Mountains and all that comes with the wild west. It’s a kooky place that enables us to live in the past, present and future without having to sacrifice our love of great restaurants and cheap matinees in the middle of the week.

While the wildlife camera was capturing the mountain lion at the top of the Sanitas Trail I was photo collaging the emerald shades along the Valley Trail – the portion of the hike I hit IMMEDIATELY AFTER climbing to the top…sorry for the caps but I just want to be sure you understand that this lion and I were within whiskers of each other.

An evening hike on Mt. Sanitas, fresh baked cookies and almond milk = a great night in BoulderThe fact that I was Facebooking a collage of my evening on Sanitas (with cookies and milk) at the exact time the cameras were capturing the lion reminds me of a sweatshirt my father would wear on our Girl Scout trips when we were little. It had a cartoon alligator picking its teeth while the remains of a green uniform -little skirt, little beanie, little badges, little green knee socks- were scattered around. The caption read, “The cookies aren’t bad either.”

Hunt on Mr. Lion. And if our paths cross in an ugly sorta way I promise to understand. Please enjoy the cookies too.

Visiting Paul and Barb in Winter Park…yes Paul is furry but that’s not him, that’s Mojo. And that’s Casey behind us waiting to get yelled at for eating grass.

One of the beauties of living in Colorado is having amazing friends who like to share their mountain homes. It’s especially beautiful when Boulder is overrun with people coming to the Boulder Creek Festival on Memorial Day weekend and you wish nothing more than to get out of town for a little peace and cool mountain air…and someone who will cook your dinner.  Paul and Barb are two such friends and they have an amazing home in Winter Park Colorado, about 2 hours West of Boulder! Yea for me!

Snowman at Hall Ranch, Boulder Co

I always appreciate when others leave smile-worthy art for all to enjoy

Last Friday Boulder set a record for the most snow to ever fall during the month of February. More than eighteen inches came down in less than 24 hours, turning Boulder into one of the most magical snowy wonderlands I’ve ever seen. I know the storm was a pain for many commuters but because I never have to be anywhere at any particular time (a lifestyle element I’ve worked hard to keep) I was able to enjoy the weather with a warm fire, a grilled cheese sammie, and my handsome husband…far from the commuting population.

Beginning the climb to Sangre's Hut

The smiles are always big at the beginning of backpack trips...

So excited to have another back country Hut trip on the horizon!!  We head out next week and because I’m too excited to wait (hence the excessive use of the word “excited”) I thought I’d post a quick travel journal from our last Hut trip… just in case we don’t return from this one due to bears, mountain lions or/and  “mother nature” (just a little stress for my mom).

First Pre 2012 New Year’s Resolution to Blog More Blog Entry

East Maroon Bells Pass, Aspen to Crested Butte
2012 Resolution #2, many more hikes with fabulous friends!

Here I sit (in Atlanta) with 22 days left in 2011 realizing that I managed to keep up with every resolution except for one, blogging. Had I kept up with my 2011 blog you’d know what my other resolutions were and you’d be able to congratulate me… but I didn’t and now I’m not sitting here at the end of 2011 feeling the love from my internet family (sigh, poor me).  I don’t understand what the problem is because I love blogging. I love sharing the crazy thoughts and photos from the day and I especially love weighing in on things that are absolutely none of my business!

So I’m going to start again. My first resolution of 2012 will be to blog (sometimes microblog) for the entire year. I admit that this is probably my umpteenth blog and I’ve done nothing to prove that I’ll be able to stick to this one anymore then I’ve stuck to the others (other then turning 40 last July and becoming a completely new woman!) but I’m refusing to feel apologetic. Much like Hollywood starlets who, year after year, return to rehab with a new determination, I’m going to keep starting blogs until one finally gives me the fix I want. Fingers crossed this will be it.

If you’re interested, here are some of my other 2012 Resolutions:

-THE BOOK!!! My writer’s block has gotten ridiculous, I’m a writer who LOVES to write but I won’t do it on a regular basis. So I’m vowing to finish my first two books (rough drafts) by my birthday in July!

-10 lbs by the beginning of March – a little more then I need to lose but this way I’ll feel great long before I reach my goal. Mind games are crucial in my world.

-4 Triathlons in Colorado – I’ve been racing in Atlanta to avoid the cold water but the expense of traveling my gear is getting pretty silly so I need to bite the bullet and race in Colorado.

-Looking respectable at least 4 days a week. I need to stop being lazy and make the effort to for my man. Wearing my garden clothes in public has gotten out of control and even though Boulder takes pride in being voted GQ’s 40th worst dressed city in the nation I know better…and even though he doesn’t say anything I know Chris will appreciate having a respectable lady on his arm. Lipstick and brushed hair, 4 days a week, no exceptions.

-In addition to these I will continue with my yearly promises to first and foremost be grateful for each and every blessing I have and to be a happy wife, to ONLY use reusable grocery sacks, to volunteer, to make the bed each day, to go with my gut when it tells me to delete things from emails before I hit send, to stick to my weekly menus, to not jam my schedule with fluff, to keep negative people at arm’s length, to fix things fast, to only buy quality clothing, and to keep an eye out for the elderly and make sure they know that I care about what they have to say.

I’m sure there are more but I’m starting to overwhelm myself so I’m going to sign off on this, my Pre-2012 New Year’s Resolution to Blog More, Blog Entry.

Happy Holidays!!!
